Walk Like an Egyptian

Take part and participate in their 10-step mummification course and prepare our dummy mummy Edfu for his eternal life in the afterlife!

This interactive and fully costumed workshop will prepare students for the highly important Ancient Egyptian job of embalmer and show them step-by-step the inventive, amazing, and downright gruesome ways the Ancient Egyptians cared for their dead. Learn of pharaohs, gods, amulets, ancient languages and more in this entertaining workshop that utilises the Dorman Museum’s very own Ancient Egyptian collection.

Session aim:

  • To explore the importance of the afterlife in Ancient Egyptian culture.

Session objectives:

  • Recognise the different steps of embalming and mummification in Ancient Egypt.
  • Participate in the preparation of a body for the afterlife.
  • Design a sarcophagus inspired by Ancient Egyptian art and practice writing in hieroglyphs.

Curriculum links (Department for Education):

  • History: “the achievements of the earliest civilizations – an overview of where and when the first civilizations appeared and a depth study of one of the following: Ancient Sumer; The Indus Valley; Ancient Egypt; The Shang Dynasty of Ancient China”.
  • Art & Design: “to improve their mastery of art and design techniques, including drawing, painting and sculpture with a range of materials [for example, pencil, charcoal, paint, clay]”.
  • Science: “describe the simple functions of the basic parts of the digestive system in humans”.
